Decorating for Dummies 101

Symmetry, Lighting and Texture…

Symmetry is the bone structure.
If you don't have symmetry, you don't have a room.

Lighting is the senses.
Without lighting, you can't complete your tasks.

Texture is the soul.
Texture makes your room worth inhabiting.

Color is the makeup.
The most superficial, the hardest to do,
and the biggest impact.

Symmetry…

#1 1 focal point

#2 2 sub-points on one wall (Our number 3 is back)

#3 A general ebb and flow of high and low around the room without falling off the “cliff“.

Lighting…

How do I make a room work?

1. Ambient Lighting...Peripheral Vision (Natural or Manmade)
2. Task Lighting...Pupil Dilation
3. Accent Lighting...Color Contacts (whether they work or not)

Texture…

Less is usually more...
but deep people are more interesting...

This is the simplest of the four. This statement means that when you are thinking about your room, you should always think about what to take away before you think of what to add. Most rooms have too much stuff in them, rather than too little, thus…less is more…

However, when it comes to texture, the more complex and layered the textures are, the more interesting the room becomes. This is similar to people…the more complex and layered they are, the more interesting they are and the more you want to spend time with them and get to know them.

Things I hoped you learned from the class…

Less is more...
Deep people are more interesting...
Beautiful things are more fun to use...
Your house is yours and you should like it...
Stealing ideas is the highest form of flattery...
Cheap does not have to look cheap...
